Philippine preparedness in case of a Big Quake

Recently, a series of earthquakes shook the Ilocos region, the strongest hit Ilocos Norte with a 6.1 magnitude earthquake. No one was hurt, fortunately, as the quake occurred deep in the earth's crust. Prior to this, Taiwan reported a quake measuring 5.8 magnitude.

These quakes are expectedly related to the big one which struck Japan. Now, is it possible for another 8plus magnitude to hit us twice, albeit, in a different location? Yes. It was possible during the period 1990-2000 and it is entirely possible within this period also, given the series of earthquakes hitting almost everywhere and at random fashion.

CNN just featured a story assessing the preparedness of the Philippines in emergency situations. The story is quite a sad one.

If an 8 magnitude quake hits home, then, I hope that happens outside city limits or in the mountains, away from any human habitation. If it strikes a densely populated city like Manila or Quezon City, then, surely, it would be a catastrophe.

President Aquino must ensure that we are adequately equipped to handle a situation like this. It would not hurt us if we prepare now.

Meanwhile...

Japan's death toll has now reached 21,000, and it is still rising as rescue teams scour the Miyagi and Senai perfectures for more survivors or victims.

Sad that this happened in a lovely country such as Japan. We pray that this does not happen to us or to anybody else.
