800 injured during Philippines' celebration of New Year

800 people injured and killed in a space of an hour. That is a record. And the Department of Health says, its an improvement, an 11% drop from the previous record of injuries and deaths related to the New Year's eve celebrations.

Most of the victims are males and the median age is about 15 years old. I'm not surprised since most fools are really men and in that age, where you need to prove yourself.

If this trend continues, then, in a space of about 20 years, we may have an additional 20,000 disabled Filipinos, some without hands and feet or with burnt faces.

I think the Philippine government should ban the sale and use of firecrackers, altogether. There is no local industry to speak of in the first place. Most firecrackers sold came from China. What stops this government from stomping its foot down and declaring criminal the sale and use of firecrackers? Its legislation. Don't tell me that the local firecracker industry is so big like the oil cartel lobby group that legislators are deathly afraid of them?

The sale should be regulated only to companies, not individuals. It is time for this government to do the impossible---stop the retail sale and use of firecrackers. Use of firecrackers should only be done by a legitimate company. Possession of a firecracker by an individual should be criminalized.
