Moammar Gadhafi--the defiant leader |
Gadhafi seemed misinformed. He probably thought that his country is being invaded by foreign powers.
Gadhafi must realize that Libya is not under foreign threat. His people are militating against him. He is the enemy, says his people.
The world has condemned Gadhafi for his brutal and oppressive tactics. Hundreds of mercenaries have entered Libya and are now being mobilized by Gadhafi to terrorize the people opposing him.
And this is expected, considering that this old leader is as stubborn as a mule. He once defied the West and even reportedly financed several terrorist activities.
And surely, Gadhafi will not heed President Barack Obama's call for him to resign and "cut and cut cleanly". Libya and the US are not really in good speaking terms. Probably, the African Union, which Gadhafi leads, would try to reason with Gadhafi.
Gadhafi assumed power in the sixties through a coup d'etat. He justified his action by calling his coup, a "revolution". Gadhafi had since ruled Libya since 1969, the longest ever serving leader in the Middle East.
Reports say, Gadhafi and his family have amassed a personal fortune of about 60 billion dollars.
Gadhafi belonged to a lower middle class family prior to his inclusion in the Libyan military. He became a member of the Free Officers Movement which launched a bloodless coup d'etat against King Edris.
At 27 years old, Gadhafi assumed power. He abolished the monarchy and established a pseudo-Socialist Arab republic. He defined this as a Islamic Socialist state.
The US allowed Gadhafi to assume power after erroneously assessing that he is a "small threat" because he exhibits a "disdain against Communism".
During his rule, Gadhafi tried to create a regional union of Arab states. It was just in the 21st century that Gadhafi allowed his relationship with the West to get "warm".
