I heard one interview by an ANC anchor with Jim Paredes. The topic is about EDSA. I am not quoting the entire transcript here, but suffice to say, there was one central thought that Paredes wanted to impress upon us and that is, the failure of EDSA lies in all of us. We, the People, are to blame for the failed EDSA experiment.
Why? Paredes said that we failed to live up to the ideals of EDSA. EDSA, for Paredes, is about democracy. It is about change. Yet, we, as a People, still live in extremely dire circumstances mainly because of our failure to change ourselves.
Wait a minute. Why are we so poor right now? Simple--our government does not have the money to develop critical infrastructures and industries that would satisfy our basic wants. Every industry right now is controlled by some big business which charges us for the services which government is supposed to do.
Why are we hard pressed for money? Simply because of graft and corruption. Our government officials steal our precious monies. Billions of pesos are lost due to corruption. Corruption did not stop with the fall of the Marcos regime. Fact is, it got worse shortly after the revolution.
Is the people to blame for all these things happening around us? No. Look at the Filipino People. Everyone follows the law. Everyone wants change to really happen. Everyone believes in unifying the ranks of the Pinoys. Every single one is religious to his god. Then, why the failure?
We failed because for so many decades now, we lack leaders, true leaders with the correct vision for this country.
Government, I should say, has failed us. Government is supposed to lead us towards a true and simple and honest path yet what path did government lead us? A path towards perdition.
Likewise, we still suffer from the sicknesses and ills brought by one-man rule. Every single official in government thinks highly of himself, as if, he is god or some prince or princess ruling one patch of land.
The Filipino is simply not to be blamed for this fiasco. No. The onus of responsibility lies in our leaders who failed to lead and simply, are pseudo-leaders. The only thing these leaders know is to sell critical government infrastructures and industries, to the detriment of future generation of Filipinos.
