Noynoy Aquino's Porsche

Some say there's nothing sexier than a Porsche. And I agree.

Others say, why buy a Japanese brand that depreciates when you have money to buy a classic brand that appreciates in value over time?

Now, if I am in the shoes of President Noynoy Aquino, and I have tons of money and someone offered me a Porsche that I know (a) is sexy and (b) appreciates in value as it ages, would I not buy it?

Only an idiot would dare say no.

Now, there are several conflicting views about Noynoy's purchase of a Porsche. One, why buy now when 34 million Filipinos are suffering from hunger each and every day? They say it's delicadeza.

I dare say, it's just a sale of a car. Will Noynoy's money worth the value of the car be able to even change the current situation of hunger or poverty incidence in our country? Quite obviously not, simply because the solution is systemic change rather than loose change.

You chanced upon an opportunity, it would only be foolish for someone like Noynoy to pass it off.

Many people say, the purchase was immoral. I dare say, the purchase was not immoral--it was a very good investment. What is so immoral about buying a car that appreciates in value, especially now that that car has turned "controversial" and is now the property of a Philippine president? I would not be shocked if the value of that Porsche balloons to six times its original price now.

That purchase is actually an intelligent one and just reflects how a Filipino reacts when given an opportunity to buy something worth its penny.

Besides, who would want to see a Philippine president riding a Toyota Vios or a KIA Pride? That is too much humiliation.

Noynoy just gave some dignity to the Office of the President.

  1. Noynoy's porsche a good investment? I beg to disagree. the original price of that porsche is way above 4.5M. It's not a 'classic' car. It's depreciating like all other modern cars. Period.

  2. Sec. 4 of RA 6173.(h) Simple living. - Public officials and employees and their families shall lead modest lives appropriate to their positions and income. They shall not indulge in extravagant or ostentatious display of wealth in any form

---He's the president but he is ignorant of the law.

  3. Hi CRedit card,

I also beg to disagree. If we are to auction the car off today, it would be worth at least 10 million pesos. Why?

First, it was the subject of a scandal and second, it's now the property of a president. By these alone, the value has already increased.
