General Angelo Reyes committed suicide over AFP fund mess (Updated)

Former AFP chief of Staff and Arroyo Defense secretary Angelo Reyes reportedly shot himself to death this morning. Reyes allegedly used his own gun in shooting himself in the chest. His aide, who saw everything, rushed him at the Quirino Memorial Hospital in Katipunan. He expired there. Doctors tried to revive him for 45 minutes. He was pronounced dead on arrival at 8:32 in the morning.

Accounts say that Reyes visited the tomb of his mother at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. Reyes reportedly cried before the tomb of his beloved mother. The former defense chief was with his two children. Afterwards, he got his 45-caliber gun and shot himself in the chest, close to the heart, says Health secretary Ona.

His two aides and children were with him when he committed suicide.

Several of his close relatives say that Reyes appeared distraught a few days ago. Reyes allegedly  appeared very disturbed with the accusations of AFP funds misuse by Reyes.

Reyes was accused by his former budget officer Lt. Colonel Rabusa of allegedly getting at least 350 million pesos from the AFP funds. Reyes was even given 50 million pesos as "pabaon".

Reyes confronted Rabusa before the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing. Rabusa accused Reyes of profitting himself from the alleged AFP Boy's club "slush fund".

Reyes was a former AFP chief of Staff of former President Joseph Estrada who later defected to anti-Estrada forces. He then served as defense secretary of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He then served as DENR secretary and later at another post before retiring from government service. He was never confirmed.

Reyes tried politics but failed. Reyes was supposed to serve as representative of a partylist organization, but his nomination was opposed.

  1. his children were with him together with an aide? did they just watch him kill himself there? or were they outside? get these facts straight, please.

  2. must be guilty..or threats coming out for his family..he didnt want his family to be involved. grave shame. if he's not guilty, he'll fight for his name.

  3. An honorable death?

This man chose the only way an honorable person will do. He committed what the Japanese calls "seppuku" rather than continue to be humiliated and to dignify the accusations from less than honorable men in uniform and in the Senate.

Rest in Peace General Reyes. I wish your accusers will have the same courage to stare at death like you did.

  4. What a waste! A very "respectable man" but because of greed, power and corruption..... "Behind the fall of a man is a woman" Siguro naman magiging lesson ito sa mga hindi sumusunod sa tuwid na daan... But I still sympathized with the family.

  12. what a sad way to end his life...may everyone who's in the middle of this "corruption in the military issue" is telling the truth. i think everyone out there in the senate spilling the beans is equally guilty. i just hope that this is not just an arroyo-estrda squabble. poor Filipinos!

  13. It is yet an admission of being guilty, but it is better for him if he confirmed all the accusation before he ended his life, that we could say " it is worth dying for".

  14. @ sage..

according to reports, the two kids were a few meters away from the general when Reyes went for his gun and shot himself with it.

  15. @ freeman,

come to think of it, Reyes' death will now absolve him and his family from possible criminal charges by the state, since death extinguishes criminal and civil liability. meaning, Reyes' family will keep their dignity and their wealth intact.

  19. There is one main reason why he committed suicide its because he is GUILTY he did something wrong and according sa Tv he committed suicide its bcoz hes not guilty which is really wrong (kapag hindi pa na kasohan ang tao syempre not guilty pa yun) he did it,its bcoz he cant take it anymore and due to depression he committed suicide coz in that action he think he can escape those problems that he encountered,I feel pity for him but did he think what he had done before? did he think it well if what are those consequences if he will do those things? Through happiness they are your friends bcoz THEY CAN USE YOU but when you are in trouble they will never help you...Politics are politics people are evil coz of money and we are so sick and tired of it... NAGHUHUGAS KAMAY yung ibang tao mga walang kwenta...

and to MR PRESIDENT AQUINO i salute your parents for what they had done for our country but please try to think of this and i hope YOU CAN READ THIS message "IDEAS WITHOUT ACTION ARE WORTHLESS unless you do" ayaw naman ng WORDS we want a RESULT we respect you and we choose you to be our leader please never let any people to dictate you mas lalong naghihirap ang mga tao ngaun so please you still have couple of years to change our WORST country to a BETTER country...

  28. I think its karma for Angie aftr he backstab president Estrada, and to continuosly serve the most corrupt govrnment in history. this government must exert all effort to rectify the corrupt in the AFP; and must put behind bars those found guilty if they dont still commit harakiri.and lastly I personally dont approve the buried in Libingan ng Bayani; it tarnish the name bayani to casimiro.

  33. 1.
Like Sen. Trillanes, I believed Gloria Arroyo has something to do with the Generals corruptions, she is doing all the “Pabaon” to the General’s for her own interest and protection. Behind the comptroller like Gen. Ligot and Gen Garcia are the Arroyo's. Why? look how they make corruptions in the government. The son's of the Arroyos have a lot of real estate properties worth millions in the U.S., the same with the Generals, their wives and children’s who are involved in the corruptions. Temptations is very high, and Gen Angelo Reyes is possibly tempted and use by the Arroyo's for their own interest. Reyes said ayaw niyang mang laglag ng mga kasama? Naduwag siyang isigaw si Arroyo, because of utang na loob..kaya nakita doon ang guilty feelings, pero malaking pagkakamali dahil umalis siya ng hindi niya sinabi ang totoo. Compare to Marcoses, Estrada’s and Arroyo’s mas garapal ang mga dating presidente sa pagnanakaw. If Reyes is guilty, I think barya lang ang kanyang ninakaw compare sa mga binanggit kong mga dating Presidente. The President and Generals is suppose to be the protector of our country, instead they destroy the reputations of the Military and the President herself.

No wonder there are a lot of carnappers, crimes are always around the corner, where is the protection? Maganda ang ating bayan ayusin lang natin para sa pagbabago. Tayo din ang makikinabang kung maaayos ang ating bayan.

Pres. NoyNoy Aquino is correct, let start to clean up the corrupt in the Government. For the benefit and security of the Filipino people, sana mag bago at malinis na ang mga ito.
    Salamat po.

  35. TO JINGGOY AND OTHERS HUWAG NG MAG LINIS LINISAN MAS MALAKI ANG NINAKAW NG TATAY MO SI DATING PRES. JOSEPH ESTRADA, AND KAPAL NG MGA MUKHA. YAN MGA MARCOSES AT ARROYO'S GARAPAL NA KAYO. MANININGIL DIN SA INYO ANG DIYOS. TAMA NA ANG MGA DRAMA NINYO.

  36. Col. Rabusa who accepts the crimes committed haunted by his ownconscience now asks forgiveness, Whistle blowers State Auditor Heidi Mendoza of COA and Col. Lim with principles and integrity step forward and shout for corruptions of this Military Generals. Ms. Mendoza is correct, and I believed many of the COA Auditors are also involved in the lagayan system, porsyentohan ang usapan. Dapat pag isipan ni Noynoy na I abolished na ang COA, and create another one. A Govt. Institutions with honesty and integrity.
