Thia Megia--Pinay Phenom |
Her latest rendition of Michael Jackson's "smile" was wonderful, but not that captivating. Her performances are fantastic, but not as memorable as say, Jacob Lusk whose vocals are really astounding, yet sometimes, over the top dramatic. Lusk, obviously, is a homosexual, but never mind. With that kind of vocals, gender is entirely irrelevant.
James Durbin is a class act but I think people are tired of "over-the-top" performances. Durbin's vocals literally shatter glasses because of the range it gets whenever Durbin's on stage. What Durbin lacks is "control" which Megia has.
Charice is one classic example of a singer that can actually belt out high notes but has the ability as well to temper it, and control it. I don't actually know if Megia can belt out ala Charice, since she has not shown how far her vocal range actually is. That's why it's interesting to watch Megia. She is a gift slowly unwrapping herself right before the eyes of the world.
Contrast that with the performance of Lauren Alaina, another 15 year old phenom. She has such a wide range that she can actually sing anything. Her problem actually is she does not know her place in the sun. She does not know how to position herself. Will she be the "babe rocker" as what she initially showed during the elims or will she be the young "Shaina Twain", the country singer.
Her recent performance in American Idol season 10 shows that she's actually struggling to define who she really is as an artist, and that is a problem. Maybe because of her young age? Anyway, she thinks that she's the best there is. But, we have seen before that even the best artist don't usually win the reality show.
To become an American Idol winner, you must be a class act. You must have that differentiating factor in you. This is just not a voice contest--this is entertainment.
