Pinay killed in New York Massacre

While hundreds of Filipino-American protestors inch closer to the Pentagon grounds protesting against the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), a Pinay lie dead, a victim of a spate of violence in New York.

Fifty three year old Dolores Yigal, a Cebuana married to an American, was shot dead by a Vietnamese who ran amuck with an armalite rifle at the American Civic Association in Binghampton New York City. The suspect, identified as forty one year old Jiverly Wong, killed himself after the rampage which killed 14 people.

Dolores was inside the American Civic Association building when Wong arrived and opened fire. Reports say Wong went berserk when he lost his job. He went absolutely crazy when he even failed his English classes. Wong could'nt speak English.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death of Dolores, a native of Cebu. She's just waiting for her citizenship papers when the terrible incident happened.

NPR shares with the Yigal family their grief with the loss of Dolores. She's survived by her siblings, who live in Canada and US.

This just proves that violence happens everywhere, even in a land of milk and honey like America. A recent paper says that petty crimes and other serious crimes are on the rise in America, brought by the worsening US recession.

Maybe people are losing hope. As I wrote here in previous entries, the first casualties in this deteriorating economic situation in the US would be immigrants.
