The Genesis of Every Blogger Byte

I started blogging two years ago, with my maiden site http://redbluethoughts.today.com/. Like everybody else, it was a personal blog. It then blossomed into a socio-political commentary. I blog every so often; then this turned into a passion, then an obsession. The "tipping point" so to speak, was when Philippine Star columnist Carmen Pedrosa picked up one of my entries (it's about Soros) and got it published in its entirety in her column. It dawned on me that blogging is a serious activity; a tool to at least do my share in nation-building. Some other entries found their way in Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin and even foreign newspapers. Right now, this site is also making its rounds in coffee shops, OFW centers and of course, in that dark room called Kalayaan Hall.

Thus, New Philippine Revolution was born. NPR was my Sierra Madre, my Olympus, the apex of things I consider very important--the formation of the Filipino Nation. Thru this site, one is enabling people to empower themselves, not thru arms but through the lethal strength and power of Ideas.

Yes, NPR stands for new ideas. It stands for change and recommends new ideas to build this Nation and regain its former glory. Its ideals are being shared by a lot of Patricios; a brand name; a monopoly that is taking some root in the consciousness of regular commenters over at ANC Teleradyo. A lot of Patricios are springing in other places left and right. From the hinderlands of Ilocos to the breakwaters of Davao, people are becoming Patricios. And they are taking it seriously and raising their voices in newspapers and television shows. Credit goes to these new change agents who are creating history in their own backyards.

That prompted me, a writer named Patricio Mangubat, to expose myself in some blogger activity. Janet Toralba, that bundle of boundless energy, invited me to the 2008 MOst Influential Blog. I met Marck Rimorin (http://www.marocharimexperiment.com/) and Arbet (http://www.awbholdings.com/ ). Talking with Marck convinced me that there are still young minds out there who are concerned about what's happening to their country.

This led to my meeting Juned Sunido of baratillo.net, then Jen, then Flow, then JV Fernandez, then Markku Fernandez, then the other bloggers in this little planet called Pinoy Blogosphere. It was a delight meeting the Jester-in-Exile, a brilliant kid with a rock-solid nationalism. Talking with the Jester makes me all the more optimistic that things will become better in due time.

Jester and Marck are two wonderful young ones whose legacy online will be lasting way up to old age. I also admired the entrepreneurial nationalism of Jon Linjap, the wit of Cocoy, the sexy words of Caffeine Sparks and the in-your-face kind of blogging by Pau (a new blogger). It was also refreshing to discuss things with DJB.

I was surprised to even meet my former DZBB boss, Ding Gagelonia of http://midfield.wordpress.com/. It turned out that he was reading my pieces over here and at http://www.filipinovoices.com/ and he was unaware that his former protege was the guy behind PM. That started a relationship, a journey of partnership to rediscover life (we're not lovers, okey?). Ding is a passionate guy. Initially, I was asking myself what was Ding's personal "tipping point". I know Ding to be a MSM insider; what prompted this guy with a humongous intelligence to spend his time blogging and plurking? Why he so suddenly turned into a nationalist? Was it because he saw how dirty the system was when he worked for Erap as his Radyo Ng Bayan station manager? Was it when he saw those midnight meals, those high-stakes gambling being done in a supposed to be hallowed place called Malacanang? Or, was it because he's seeing filth turning into an institutionalized sticker under this present regime? Who knows. What's important, Ding is one sonafabitch (pardon my French) who will risk life and limb just to see a brighter and better future not only for his kids but for everybody's sake.

But, the one thing which Ding likes to share with me is his passion to make Smokes (Rom to many and blogs at http://smoketalk.blogspot.com/) appear. For Ding, Marck and Jester, seeing Rom in the flesh is a wonderful xmas gift.

So, the online revolution is reaping its fruits. People are slowly rising up. People are arming themselves with knowledge. Filipinos are proving to the world that we are not the people being described by this blogger calling himself BenigNo.

BenigNo is a poor anthithesis of Manolo Quezon III (http://www.quezon.com/) , a true-blue nationalist with royal blood running thru his veins. BenigNo promotes himself and lectures us with a poorly constructed paradigm that harms the intellect more than it nurtures new ideas. Manolo, meanwhile, analyzes using newer paradigms that cuts across a swath of smoking mirrors to reveal the hidden and naked reasons behind every historical action. As a historiographer myself, I relate to what Manolo is trying to say and find it juvenile to even give BenigNo a precious attention. Those who self-promote themselves obviously lack intelligence and self-confidence.

Having said that, I found it rather revolting to learn that some bloggers (I would not mention names here since I exercise ethics in this site) are selling themselves to the highest bidder. Yes, they are selling their very souls to corporate Public Relations practitioners (and Malacanang press operators). Worst, some blogger even sold their own colleagues to these reputation agents for reportedly a huge fee. A list supposedly exist, with the names of political and non-political bloggers and given to a politico who reportedly paid this blogger a huge sum.

Everybody who considers himself a member of the Pinoy blogosphere expected this to happen. Like any other field, there will be rotten ones who would corrupt and would offer the poisoned fruit. But, no one, expected it to happen so soon. People like Butch Dado and his lovely wife Noemi, Dang, Janet, JV and all others are trying their darnest best to keep the Pinoy Blogosphere clean as a whistle but this stupid ingrate tried to spoil everything.

YOU--YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID--SHAME ON YOU! Shame that you sold your very soul to the highest bidder. Shame that you even sold your friends, telling politicos and marketing managers that you own them when you know in your heart that you don't own anyone. Bloggers are not commodities. We are not for sale!

To my fellow bloggers, hear my plea---MAKE THE PHILIPPINE BLOGOSPHERE CLEAN. DON'T ALLOW THIS HALLOWED PLACE OF FREE EXPRESSION BE CORRUPTED BY CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS, POLITICAL OPERATORS AND WHAT HAVE YOU. WE MUST POLICE OUR RANKS. WE MUST STAY CLEAR OF PEOPLE WHO USE US JUST TO PROMOTE A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT, DEFEND A DIRTY POLITICIAN OR DESTROY REPUTATIONS.

BLOGGERS ARE PURE SOULS. BLOGGING IS SACRED. BLOGGING IS THE TRUEST EXPRESSION OF THE SELF. BLOGGING IS OUR "I".

THOSE WHO SOLD THEIR SOULS SHOULD EXPECT THEIR DEATHS VERY SOON. AND I MEAN SOON. (THAT'S FIGURATIVE, FOOL!)

    I agree.

  2. Nice to meet you at the party, Pat! Sorry I stole Juned (and ran out of calling cards hehe), we haven't chatted for about a month already :) Anyway, if he hasn't sent you my email yet, you can reach me through my site.

Hmm.. I have a feeling this is the same person that made my blood pressure rise a couple of notches when I was told about it.

But, as I have said, there really are still people who WILL make the effort to keep some things "clean." Some just have an awful moral compass, they think everyone is like them just because they're like that. They're deluding themselves, but the fact remains that there are still people who will try to keep things clean no matter what.

  3. i saw it coming and it does.

and that is not unthinkable. consider that there are many bloggers who run after cents and few bucks and then call themselves as pro bloggers.

your statement is logical and i believe you. after all lahat tayo mamatay, kahit bad or good ka, kahit you sell your soul or not.

    peace.

  4. this comes as a shock of sorts. this is the first time i've heard of real sellout bloggers who write in exchange for money. all the while i thought adsense shielded bloggers from this kind of corruption. very sad. very sad, indeed.

  5. Yep, it's brewing to be another online scandal.

    Who could this blogger be?

    ReplyDelete
  6. But wait, what kind of fool would buy a blogger? Anyone who's been online reading blog a while know that a blogger is the lest influential of all opinion makers. Take MLQ for instance, arguably the most influential pinoy blogger around. Have you ever known anyone being convinced by him on his blog?

So I'm thinking, this could simply be disinformation, a tactic to make us distrust one another and lose focus on the prize. Incidentally, I never encountered a blog that actively promotes a politician, not even in a subtle way. Not unless, it was Mar Roxas who paid them off, Mar being the only possibility here.

  7. As for CORPORATE sponsorship. I know a few obvious ones and I heard they weren't even paid in money, only promises.

  8. Sexy words pala. Salamat hehe.

Sino-sino ang mga nagbenta ng kaluluwang ito??

  9. Patricio, is it related to this:

    http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/mad-crowd-media-dont-piss-me-off
    ?

Or is it worse? I mean is it an actual pay-off like polls do with mainstream media in the newspapers, radio and TV?

It would also help if we stop being naive about the blogosphere. Blogs can be anything, absolutely anything. There are only two requirements for blogs: that posts are central to the site (whether in words, in photos or in movie clips) and that it is regularly updated, e.g. hourly, daily, monthly, yearly, etc.

Now there are personal blogs, review blogs, news blogs, opinion blogs, photo blogs, all sorts. Some are there to make money (there is indeed some sort of code of ethics for this but it's vague and unenforceable unless other blogs have the inclination to expose and shame you) and some are ad free.

Blogs like engadget and gizmodo, the most popular blogs in the WWW accept corporate advertising, not just adsense (they've stopped using adsense altogether, i believe). They live for corporate ads.

Blogs like Gawker have been controversial for breaking privacy laws, or so some lawyers think. Famous political blogs like the huffington post make a lot of money. It's big business, huffington post. Wonkette is a member of Gawker Media, a lucrative business based on blogging.

Now, I'm not sure I'm with you a hundred per cent on keeping the Pinoy Blogosphere pure. Some people who have already made a comment in this post are known pro-bloggers and I believe they do more than just make money thru AD SENSE. I think you're also scaring the beejezus out of other bloggers who make money online.

Blogging is not a narrow medium and it's not an exclusive club. You might have been under a false impression of blogging.

The most important question of all: who are these bloggers who got paid by a politician? There is no need for self-appointed blog maintenance people to CLEAN UP pinoy blogoshere. This little club called Pinoy Blogosphere, in my opinion, is pretentious to begin with. I have been there since the time of nettime.org, bbs.thing.net etoy vs etoys. Believe me, keeping the Internet free and pure is neither here nor there.

  10. thanks for the compliment but from the little i know, this may all be a very big misunderstanding concerning the person in question (if my guess is correct). you may have jumped the gun on this one.

  11. Ahhh... the power of innuendos and convenience of saying "... I have high standards and will not name names" after claiming that there are poisonous folks ... some bloggers (I would not mention names here since I exercise ethics in this site) are selling themselves to the highest bidder. Yes, they are selling their very souls to corporate Public Relations practitioners (and Malacanang press operators). Worst, some blogger even sold their own colleagues to these reputation agents for reportedly a huge fee.

Of course I may be because of someone else dishing out innuendos, but didn't you mention in an earlier blogpost about Brian? Or maybe I just recall your mention of Ellen?

  13. Hi all,

Thanks for all for commenting. Manolo, the guy whom I was mentioning here actually encountered a terrible legal problem with some of our friends before. I mean, he really committed a grievous sin which, nearly cost him a year in jail. However, cooler heads prevailed and no legal action was taken.

  14. I must say, this is very interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I may have to agree with BrianB on this one. So what if he sold himself to the highest bidder? Let him. It's his prerogative. A single blogger can't start World War 3 or something.

About his own colleagues being sold as well? Well... they do have their own brains to reject any "offer" they don't like right?

I also disagree with your comment about Jester... "Talking with the Jester makes me all the more optimistic that things will become better in due time."

Better read this and this... might change your view. I wouldn't be optimistic on a person who's pastime is to tell lies and damage hard earned reputations online.

If we follow your request of "cleaning" the "pinoy blogosphere", then might as well shutdown ALL blogs offering Ad spaces, Adsense, bloggers attending "sponsored events", and those doing paid reviews.

Your blog has Google adsense, don't you think you're also "selling" some part of your soul to some corporations or company that are paying Google to display and pimp their ads on your blog? For example, your adsense can always display "filipina dating sites" if someone flooded your comments with keywords specially targeted by that ad. You cannot filter them off 100%, unless you remove your adsense.

Well that counts you out Jepoy - that's precisely what you've been doing - not that I care about my reputation - but I do care about the truth, and hypocrisy such as yours.
You are paper thin, your ethics even thinner - you will do anything for traffic - I've seen some of the links and earlier posts on your site - for all your pretentious morality - you actually support the Philippines sex industry - you are a hypocrite of the lowest order.
Fortunately you are in a minority.

  17. Unfortunately Cumper, you are accusing anyone who disagrees with you. Even respectable people like Ms. Noemi Dado, Reyna Elena, and Ms. Cathy.

I'm tired arguing with a bloody scumbag like you, it's like arguing with a rock... seriously, I might be better off arguing with a rock than with you.

Anyway, since you decided to do a suicide on Filipino Voices, here's your wish of attention:

  18. You have valid points. It is indeed a dark time when bloggers lose their morality.

We are talking specifically about bloggers who turn left and right and have no backbone when it comes to issues.

I understand your stand and to a certain extent I am with you although Jepoy also has a point and we need to clarify what kind of bloggers we are pertaining to.

As for Jester. I am sorry but my experience with him has not been the same as the one you experienced. He called me an effing idiot and threatened to sue me with a bogus law over something he wasn't even directly involved. He also made an article which twisted 2 different articles into his own version of the truth. Due to this GameOPS integrity was put in question. If this is the same person we are talking about I beg to disagree.

You're really taking this badly aren't you - personally - you're really getting angry aren't you - full of hatred?
