Political mud-raking is a practice only seen in American politics, not in Philippine politics. Give me at least ten examples in the past where political parties used personal issues or domestic problems against certain Philippine politicians and you'll find it extremely hard to even complete five.
The point is simply this---Filipinos are traditionally respectful of other people's business. Yes, one's emotional quotient is important when assessing someone's chances in an elective post. Yes, one's moral standi is important as a legal qualification in certain elective posts, as in the case of one indicted for adultery or concubinage, definitely, he cannot be considered as a candidate in any elective post.
Yet, when you look at how people suddenly reacted on what Kris Aquino did when she confronted the alleged paramour of her husband, you'll find it extremely hard to believe that some people would stoop that low just to find even an iota of mud for them to throw at Senator Noynoy Aquino.
Senator Noynoy Aquino is not running for sainthood. He's not even a saint. Noynoy is human. And like every one of us, frail and full of faults.
But, was it his fault that his youngest sister, Kris, always fall out of love or always go out head first for love? No. Kris is also human, frail and full of faults. She's not a saint nor can we say that she's a hero. She's a celebrity and celebrities act not as normal as we expect them to. Like every single one of us, Kris deserves to be happy.
And why is that that some people would use this as basis for voting or not voting for Noynoy? The acts of the sister is not the fault of the brother. And surely, even this, is not connected with one's qualities or qualifications as a candidate.
What is normal and civil is this--condemn the actions of James Yap, if this is true, and support abused women like Kris Aquino. Kris deserves our support, particularly of women who experience the same kind of treatment from their husbands.
Condemn those who philandered, not the victims.
