Update on General Reyes' suicide: Arroyo call made Reyes "sad"

A mysterious phone call from his former boss, ex-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo may have lead former AFP Chief of Staff and defense secretary Angelo Reyes to kill myself. Sources reveal that Arroyo reportedly called Reyes days after that explosive episode in the Senate when Reyes was confronted by his kumpadre, Lt. Colonel George Rabusa.

The Arroyo call made Reyes' angry and sad, several sources say. Arroyo reportedly again made several calls to the former general, reportedly concerned over the "serious" allegations of fund misuse by Reyes and his former officials at the AFP.

Remember that Arroyo's name was dragged in several reports, which insinuated that the former president had knowledge of the AFP officer's supposed "slush fund".

Last night, another source revealed that Reyes had another conversation with several former AFP officials. After the talk, Reyes reportedly became even more forlorn.

In several interviews with close Arroyo associates who already visited the Reyes' family residence this morning, one says that two of Reyes' sons were still shocked with what happened.

According to them, the former General asked for a few minutes more with his dead mother, whom the General loved dearly when she was still alive. Purificacion Reyes was reportedly very close to Reyes whom she described as a "young intelligent kid". His father, Pablo, died in 1969.

Reyes' two kids and two aides left the ex-General and went to their car, a Nissan. Reyes reportedly wanted a few more minutes of silence and prayers before the tomb of his mother. Reyes reportedly said sorry a couple of times. Reyes' two kids do not know that their father brought his 45-caliber pistol revolver with him.

A loud gun shot was heard. Before they know it, they saw the general slumped before the tombstone of his mother. They all thought that Reyes was shot. The two aides carried the almost lifeless body of the general to their car. They sped to the Quirino Memorial Hospital.

Doctors who attended Reyes said that he showed no vital signs of life when brought to the ICU. Doctors tried to revive him. After forty five minutes, Reyes was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced that Reyes will be given a state burial. The Senate postponed the hearing on the alleged AFP fund misuse today, in deference to Reyes.
