On Yolanda victims--Mr. President, please don't rub it in

Today, President Aquino slammed victims of Typhoon Yolanda, when he commented about the victim's "demands" to be "compensated" by government with monies worth 40,000.00. Though the president's comments were understandable, I think the timing is quite bad given that those victims just had their demonstration yesterday. Instead of commiserating, the president appeared to be even insinuating something bad against my fellow Warays.

Mr. President, these people are not mendicants. I think the reason why they are asking is because they're desperate. Yes, that sum of money would not be sufficient to provide for their future needs. Yes, that sum of money will just be a drop in the bucket, but for my kababayans, 40,000 is a huge sum already and that will help them tide everything thru.

Mr. President, I know there was no point in your life, even during those times when your family was being prosecuted, that you lost money. These people not just lost the lives of their loved ones--they practically lost all hope. You'll not understand because you never experienced losing everything you have.

What people desperately want from you Mr. President is not money, but understanding and action. Please, our wounds are still fresh. Don't rub the salt in, by depicting us, Warays, as mendicants.

When you were asking for our votes, we supported you without strings attached because we believed in you. Believe in us when we say we desperately need your help, and fast.
