Destabilization looms

This mid-term elections could spark or precipitate a serious political challenge for the Aquino administration. This early, there are three (3) factors that, if not addressed and managed properly, could turn the elections into a spark that will eventually affect the political stability of this government.

One, early accusations about the PCOS machines. Groups are demanding the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to show transparency by allowing third parties to inspect the integrity of these machines. Two things sparked the "curiosity" of people---early announcement of Senator Frank Drilon of a 12 clean sweep of the Senatorial elections by the administration, and the ongoing legal dispute between Smartmatic and its previous software provider.

Comelec also bungled its early test of the machines. Obviously, this bungling was handled before the media. However, if these happens during the elections, and massive disfranchisement and other under handed tactics deprive candidates of their legitimate votes, this will turn into a nasty and unmanageable situation.

UNA and the camp of Vice President Binay consider this election as crucial for 2016. If Binay loses his grassroots network, he definitely will lose the presidency altogether. This early, critical power players in metropolitical centers are being crippled and disabled, most of them close associates of Binay. The Liberal Party is serious on mounting a successful presidential campaign by 2016, and they would really dismantle every single power center out there which is not within their scope.

Possibility of political parties crying foul this elections? Huge.

Possibility of these parties becoming destabilizers after the elections? Huge.

Defining Moment

The Arroyo administration thrives on destabilization. When a new destabilizing situation occurs, it mechanically implements adoptive measures, re-adjusts its actions, even moves backward and strikes when the situation cools. This is the tried and tested formula against destabilization by a regime which, itself, has been the beneficiary of a political poison fruit.

This explains why presidential son Mikey Arroyo called for a press conference to assuage public outrage against their cha-cha initiatives. This explains why the palace allowed Joc-Joc to go to the Senate and fool the senators. This explains why there's no palace gag order for DA directors to testify on the fertilizer fund issue and there's no order for anybody to publicly neutralize known oppositors of the Arroyo regime.

The palace game plan is very simple--deprive its enemies of their "defining moment". In politics, a "defining moment" is described as an "emotionally charged" situation that would rouse the people to take action and transform the perception of people about the present regime from "partially trust-worthy" to " capricious, greedy and using its powers to deprive people of justice." The present hearings have the potential of transforming positive perceptions to negative and even reactive ones.

This explains Palace spokesperson's Anthony Golez "tantrum" diatribe against the minority at the House impeachment hearings, for a walkout is actually a powerful communication tool that could re-ignite passions against the present dispensation. That's why the palace is constantly monitoring and managing the information environment to prevent the rise of dissent against the present dispensation.

In the present situation, Malacanang tries to pooh-pooh the revelations of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. It tries to manage the information environment by fielding its crisis communication lieutenants, fanning themselves out among various publications to at least control the flow of poisoned news against Gloria. The goal is simple--insulate Gloria at all costs against accusations by the Opposition. There may be a grain of truth behind Joe's revelations but these are being obfuscated by news on term extensions and the like. Joe may be allowed to hug the headlines but up to a certain point. Gloria is being isolated from the controversies while her husband, Big Mike, operates silently behind the bamboo shades.

Both Gloria and her enemies want to control one element--time. For Gloria's camp, a day is equivalent to a year more of stay. The more they stay the bolo of those who want to hack her head, the better. For those who oppose her, time is at the essence. The need to create a "defining moment" at a precise time is the order of the day. And will they be able to get their "defining moment, " is a big question.

Yesterday's walkout has the potential of igniting passions. News about proposals to extend Gloria's term has the big chance of convincing people to act. Everybody is waiting for the first one to stand up and act. That first act should immediately be a show of force. This should be something similar to a walkout of young officers. Or, this could potentially be something of an institutional action where idealistic generals walk out of their Commander-in-Chief. Then the people will follow.

The present politico-social atmosphere can be likened to a tightly sealed room filled with liquified petroleum gas. Everybody's there, holding their breaths and waiting for someone to just light a match to end everyone's agony.

Do We Really Need Democracy?

Mrs. Arroyo made a speech before the Chinese-Filipino Business Club yesterday. She lambasted her detractors and told the crowd that the government is now, stronger than ever. It was a speech directed against those who want to throw her out of office. It was a good speech but made in a wrong venue.

Why do the speech infront of businessmen? Was it for fund-raising? Surely, it was not made to further increase investor confidence. For if it did, then, it was such a foolish thing to do. One, it confirmed the fears of everybody that there's a threat to national security and two, why would businessmen care?

I don't really know if we need to be stronger or if we do need to be more independent. Arroyo said she's stronger now. Why say that? Who is she really fighting against? Is she telling the people that she's stronger and she can't be ousted from power? Probably, that's the motivation.

That speech confirmed the fact that she's now the enemy of the people. Because the people really want her out. By saying that she's stronger shows how weak is really is. If you're strong, you don't say it. You show it. And being strong does'nt mean being impertinent nor being hawak tuko to power. No.

Being strong, as a leader, should mean strong in pursuing the people's interest. A leader must always think of the national welfare. Strength should mean humility and magnanimity. Strength means letting go when the time comes for one to go. That is strong leadership.

But do we need to be stronger now? Yes, for the right reasons. We need to be strong against increasing foreign intrusions into the economy. We need to be strong against terrorism. And we need to be strong against grafters and corrupt men.

Yet, being strong against those who oppose you is not strength. Its being lusty in power.

The People does'nt need to be a strong men. We need to be more free, more democratic. Why? Being democratic affords us to further develop and compete with foreign economic powers who constantly encroach at our economic gains.

A freer and more democratic society leads to a more creative and more satisfied people. Arroyo is denying this right to us. She wants everyone to toe her line. Its fine if she's leading us to the promise land. But, she's leading us blindly into uncertain dark skies. And its time for us to desist from having her as our leader.
