Jack Enrile---from biker to senator
Reading Jack Enrile's life today makes my decision to support him unassailable. My friend, Jerome Aning wrote about him today (see link). Jack's life reflects the life of many other wealthy Filipinos who migrated to the United States during the dictatorship, and went back here in the desire to help rebuild this country.
One of the things that really affected this country during those "dark days" was the uncertainty that many felt attended the regime when Marcos became sick. Generations who lived during those times have three choices: live a normal yet compromised life, live in opposition by going someplace else or live through active resistance. As a son of the most powerful men in Marcos' cabinet, Jack Enrile cannot just "go someplace else" and express what was in his mind. Like thousands of youth in his generation, he preferred to go to the States and there, find meaning in his life. He did so for 15 years.
When he came back, Jack possessed knowledge and skills that he want other Filipinos to have. Jack longed for true change. He became what I described as a social entrepreneur. He invested his life trying to improve other people's lives.
Jack Enrile's sojourn to the States was about finding the true meaning of life. He probably did not realize that his true mission lies in helping poor farmers in Cagayan. He realized that during his close encounters with them as an entrepreneur.
He did not need a bike to go throughout the country and discover the true state of our affairs. Jack spent most of his waking hours fighting for what he believed in---food security and food sovereignty. He believes that when every single one of us eats the right foods at the right price, then, everything, even poverty will be eradicated.
HIs simple prescription is actually a panacea believed in by several hundreds of his own kind for so many years. The elite never believed that it is the system that needs change, especially the people that run it.
Jack Enrile may have inherited a political brand name. Yet, Jack Enrile especially those who know him personally, is his own man. He has his own political principles and beliefs.
Let us allow him to realize these principles at the halls of the Senate. At least, our support for him would not be in vain, ,unlike when we support a daughter with another political brand name attached to her due to her birthright. She thinks that being a senator is a birthright, not something you work for.

Jackie Enrile, up close and personal: " I have nothing to do with Alfie Anido's death"
![]() |
Alfie Anido, dead at 22
It was a day before New Year's eve when residents of Bel-Air in Makati heard a shot, then cries and shouts of agony. Alfie Anido, the 22 year old who just celebrated his birthday with his girlfriend, Katrina Ponce-Enrile, lies dead, with a bullet wound in the head. Initial results of the investigation by the Makati police indicated that it was self-inflicted. Anido, who was then in the prime of his showbiz career, shot himself with a 38 caliber pistol. An alleged suicide note was discovered, addressed to Anido's dad and saying how Alfie wanted to end his life. It was December 30, 1981.
For those who still remember that fateful date, it was as shocking as Kris Aquino's public revelation of her ill-fated relationship with Joey Marquez. Alfie was that generation's Phenom kid, a handsome rich guy who was not just a pretty face, but an accomplished and recognized thespian as well. The local showbiz was then recovering from years of creative infatuation and low sales. Alfie Anido's entry in showbizness revived its glory days.
Alfie’s contemporaries back then, are today’s highly respected and accomplished actors and actresses. Alfie Anido was a Regal Baby, along with Gabby Concepcion, Jimmy Melendrez (father of actress Aiko), Albert Martinez, Snooky Serna, Maricel Soriano and Dina Bonnevie.
Prior to his becoming an actor, Alfie was an accomplished commercial model like Gabby Concepcion (father of KC Concepcion). He was taking up Management at the Ateneo de Manila University. His family is quite well-known especially in social circles. He’s supposed to take over the family business upon his father’s retirement.
Dina Bonnevie was then a very young actress who caught the public’s imagination with her classic beauty. Publicly, Dina was Alfie’s rumored girlfriend. Unknown to many, Alfie had a girlfriend, and she happened to be the daughter of former President Ferdinand Marcos’ defense minister, Juan Ponce Enrile.
Katrina Ponce-Enrile was that era’s equivalent of a rich girl turned social Phenom. Many desired her beauty. At the time of Alfie’s death, Katrina had a date with the matinee idol. They reportedly spent his birthday at a church in Antipolo.
Reviewing the case file, and numerous accounts way back at that time, it was said that Katrina and Alfie had a spat, which resulted in Alfie slapping Katrina. The episode ended in a separation. Alfie took Katrina back in her house. Alfie then went home, allegedly distraught by the situation.

Katrina Ponce-Enrile
When news about the incident spread first in social circles and then percolated into the public sphere, many “whispered” (because at that time, it was still Martial Law, and the Enriles were in power) that probably, Katrina’s brother, Jackie Enrile, might have shot Alfie to death.
Those “whispers” are still being traded until now, albeit, not as “heated” like those times. Since this issue was never really clarified in public, the issue is still part of urban legend. Officially, the cause of death is suicide, and in spite of many “suspicions” and “innuendoes”, no one really came forward and disputed the police findings.
At last night’s dinner with Jackie, he was decisively frank about what really happened back then. I asked him, why was his name dragged in this controversial suicide? I even intentionally linked his name with Dina for him to correct it and reveal his true recollections of that day.
(There were rumors that Jackie wanted Dina as a girlfriend but was spurned by the actress. Dina reportedly chose Alfie which reportedly infuriated Jackie.)
Jackie Enrile deconstructed
It was an hour or so before he reached the Anido’s house in Bel-Air. Again, Jack corroborated the fact that the Enrile family and the Anido’s are good friends (some say, until now).
Jack recalls seeing Katrina crying inconsolably beside Anido’s death bed. He also saw the revolver used by Anido in killing himself.
Jack denies ever having a hand in Alfie killing himself. He said that it was not his nature of using a gun out of anger. Contrary to public belief, Jackie does not carry a revolver.
What actually aroused my curiosity further was the post-events that happened. Jackie reportedly went to the States shortly after that, further inflaming rumors back then on his alleged participation in Anido’s “mysterious” death.
Why do people suspect Jackie Enrile’s hand in that apparent suicide?
Well, people surmised that the alleged “killing” happened shortly after Katrina went back to her house. There were insinuations that Jackie saw Katrina’s face and vowed revenge. People said that Jackie went to Anido’s house, barged inside and confronted Anido which led to the fatal shooting. These of course, are part of urban legend.
Why do I say that? As a veteran police reporter, it was unnatural for someone who just killed somebody to go back to the crime scene. If Jackie really had a hand on this, the most natural thing to do was the opposite.
We may never know what really happened but these facts are not disputed:
1. Alfie had a spat with Katrina.
2. The spat was reportedly part of previous serious altercations between the two lovers. Meaning, it was not the first time that Alfie and Katrina fought over still unclear issues.
3. The spat led to a separation which Alfie reportedly took very seriously.
4. Alfie went to Katrina’s house and she went in. (This is where people surmised that Jackie saw Katrina and got angry when he learned that his sister got slapped by Alfie).
5. Alfie went back to his house and at 1am, got a revolver and shot himself in the head. He left a suicide note.
6. After discovering his lifeless body, relatives of Alfie reportedly called Katrina. Katrina went to Alfie’s house and saw her lover dead.
7. News spread of Alfie’s alleged suicide. It reached Jackie who was spending a night with friends.
8. Jackie went to Anido’s house and saw the lifeless body of his friend and his sister crying inconsolably.
9. After the celebrated scandal, Jackie went to the States. Nothing was heard about Katrina Ponce-Enrile.
10. The scandal rocked the Marcos regime, which was at that time, facing numerous political threats.
This ends the mystery of Alfie Anido's death.
Jack Enrile: Demystified
Me and Jack Enrile
For Jack, who
spent dinner with me last night at Petra and Pilar, a restaurant his family
owns, the allure of politics is nothing compared to the excitement he gets as a
businessman. For forty years, Jack Enrile quietly built a strong reputation as
a businessman. During the eighties, Jack went to the States and brought back
here ideas that he thinks would help him in his business, yet, at the same
time, ideas that would help improve the lives of his kababayans in Cagayan.
Jack talking to his constituents
Jackie Enrile is
no ordinary entrepreneur. He is, to my mind, a social entrepreneur, one who not
only do business for the sake of profits, but, does things for the sake of his
fellow Filipinos. In Cagayan, Jackie Enrile worked with farmers. He tried very
hard to understand their lives. He went out of his way researching the things
farmers need.
That's how Jackie
Enrile described his life for the last four decades. When Jackie told me about
this, I suddenly remembered one of my closest and most admired friends, Joey de
Venecia III, a namesake of former Speaker Jose De Venecia and another one, Owen
Singson. Incidentally, all of these friends of mine belong to illustrious
political families in Regions 1 and 2 who, at the onset, did not follow the
footsteps of their highly popular dads.
Cool, collected and highly magnetic personality
Joey, as you know,
is really a businessman. He just ran for the Senate in 2010 because he thinks
that it was his duty as a citizen to correct the monumental errors in
governance. Many people thought that the political road is where he will
dedicate his life to, but he remains dear to me because he chose not to. Many
people thought he will be running as Senator in this election, but he chose
not.
Same case with
Owen Singson, who for many years, managed the businesses of his family. When,
however, his dad, Congressman Eric Singson of Ilocos Sur ended his term, Owen
had no choice but to run for the post. At first, Owen was reluctant. When he
won (he will be serving his second term if he wins this year), Owen dedicated
all his life to the service of his people. The last talk we had, Owen intimated
to me that he now enjoys serving the people.
" We lost our capability to feed ourselves."
Jackie Enrile was
raised in a different era. This is the reason why I wanted to interview him. He
could be our country's game changer (BY the way, I'll be writing a piece about
Jackie Enrile in my new blog http://pinoygamechangers.wordpress.com. That would
be more in depth).
Anyway, for middle
aged and older voters, the name Jackie Enrile still strikes someone cold or it
is still clothed in mystery.
During the
seventies and early eighties, mention the word "Jackie Enrile" and
someone would say that he's a brat. There were rumors back then that Jackie
Enrile always carries a gun and surrounded by heavily armed security guards.
Visionary, loves the masses
Last night, I
found nothing unusual with the number of people securing him. Fact is, his
security detail is not as big as others.
When I asked him
several "controversial questions", Jackie Enrile was calm and
helpful. He is far from the "Jackie Enrile" that people once feared
because he is the son of Marcos' former defense minister.
Ask him about the
Enrile political brand name and he will tell you what it is---people like what
his father did to them, to improve their lives, and other people hate his
father for what he did during Martial law. The Enrile name is still highly
popular, says Jackie. However, people feel ambivalence whenever they are asked
what they feel or think about the legacy of his father, Juan Ponce.
The Will to serve is there
Jackie Enrile
appears to be a very honest person, a good trait for a person who wants to be
different in Philippine politics. I had the pleasure of interviewing his father
many times as a Senator, and the Senate President's style is unique.
Juan Ponce belongs
to the era of the old politics, while Jackie exudes the kind of politics that
this generation needs---honest, brutally frank, intelligent, visionary and
driven by a desire, a passion even, of giving true service to the people.
Juan Ponce's
politics are the prime-bang, ornate style of speaking while Jackie's style is
more of the masses--he speaks when asked to, and has so many ideas in his
head and is passionate about what he believes that it is next to impossible for
someone to ask him to stop explaining because he speaks animatedly and with
conviction.
Jackie Enrile, by
the way, is the only Senatoriable right now, who advocates for food
sovereignty. The term is heavy, but Jackie Enrile says, farmers and the poor
folks in the rural backwaters of Philippine society understand this quite
perfectly.
Because he spent
many years with farmers, Jackie Enrile sees their condition differently. I
suddenly remembered Tita Midz (Tita Armida Siguion-Reyna). Tita Midz was with
me during the struggle against the electoral injustice Arroyo did to FPJ. I
shared the stage with her during the protest stage when we both got splashed strung
with dirty water by Arroyo's police minions and nearly got arrested.
Because of his
strong advocacy for the farmers, Jackie Enrile, I believe, has his aunt's
political convictions, his dad's strong political will, and his mother's heart.
He is strong willed yes, but his style is really consultative, a style that
suits the Senate.
Now that we have
"unmasked" the true Jackie Enrile, how about asking him about his
true "role" or "participation" in the mysterious death of a
former matinee idol, Alfie Anido. Read on.
(First of two
blogs about Jackie Enrile. I will likewise write something about him in my
other blogs, http://peepeeps.com and http://pinoygamechangers.wordpress.com. TO
