The possibility of President Benigno S. Aquino III getting his first taste of a coup looms much bigger today than in the first four years of his administration, a source told this writer yesterday.
In a private huddle this weekend, a source says that if Aquino falls due to a coup, it is because of his own doing. He says Aquino has distanced himself from various groups which have worked hard for his election in 2010.
These groups, most of them composed of well-meaning individuals who did not seek any appointive posts from Aquino, enjoy a high reputation among middle forces.
Since the DAP issue broke out, many of the conscience block of the Aquino administration asked for the president's explanation but was repulsed, allegedly by the President himself. Another group, those close to the family especially to the Presidential sisters and some members of the partylist group Akbayan were likewise given the bum steer reportedly by the President.
According to some people, people behind Hyatt 10 and those close to LP Mar Roxas were responsible for the indignant stance of the President. One of the Hyatt 10 members, reportedly Butch Abad was the one who reportedly told the President to "stick to the group" for fears of getting a backlash reportedly from the stated enemies of the administration (read: " pro-Arroyo" group).
Now, it seems that the President has been "besieged" by LP and other people closely allied with Mar Roxas (read: LP). Presidential adviser Ronald Llamas, a member of Akbayan, and Vicente Emano, a member of the Black and White Movement are reportedly already working for the Mar Roxas group.
A source says the President is now "with blinders". She did not elaborate.
With the conscience block already neutralized, the Hyatt 10 and the Mar Roxas group are now struggling very hard to neutralize officials close to the Vice President. However, one of them, Executive secretary Paquito Ochoa continues to enjoy tremendous trust of the President inspite of his being a member of the Panay block. (Remember that there are four blocks in the palace surrounding the President: Balai of Mar Roxas composed of LP, Black and White Movement, Akbayan and Hyatt 10 members, Panay composed of close associates of the Aquino family who supported Binay as vice presidential candidate, Panfilo Lacson block and Chiz Escudero/Sergio Osmena block. Osmena has since distanced himself from the palace, leaving Escudero's group behind.
Many of those within the conscience block are close to idealistic soldiers and former officials of the AFP. It is said that some of them are moving against the administration.
Another group, composed of retired and junior officers who oppose the Bangsamoro Basic Law, is likewise a serious threat to the survival of the Aquino administration.

Erap to be jailed again?
How true are these reports percolating within groups and coffee shops in Manila about the impending re-arrest and possible re-detention of former president Joseph Estrada? Estrada is reportedly to be arrested and jailed again for possible complicity in the BW scandal, involving one of his closest friends, Dante Tan.
Today, the Court of Appeals just overturned the 2007 decision by the RTC of Pasig dismissing the case against Tan, etal. Many view this as the start of an aggressive campaign by the administration to create the necessary conditions for a State of Emergency. It seems that hawks within the palace are hell-bent on extending the "benevolent" term of Mrs. Arroyo. They are lifting all stops.
Will Estrada and his forces allow this to happen? Surely, what the administration expects to happen is the heightening of political noise. Lately, there has been a dearth of political news, except of course, news about charter change.
Lakas and KAMPI have just decided to merge in preparation for the 2010 elections. Prospero Nograles and Luis Villafuerte just resigned their posts as party presidents. Nograles said it is now up to the president to marshall her men and her resources to resolve contentious party matters. Sources say Arroyo is sure to succumb to the temptation, even instructing her closest advisers to control the release of congressional funds.
Now, going back to Erap....it seems that his declaration to lead the charter change movement is a subterfuge meant as a countermeasure against the possible administration-led attack against him. Palace allies are determined not to allow Erap to re-establish his political machinery for a possible political comeback in 2010. Reports that one of Erap's trusted grassroots adviser and ideologue have been touring the country to again revive the successful JEEP IN ERAP has been deemed a "security matter" by the palace. These reports have sent chills down the spine of the Arroyo group, even some members of the Lakas faction of FVR. Note that Erap and Ramos have not reconciled since the latter ousted him from power in 2001. Erap once used his presidential powers to prosecute Ramos for the many controversial scandals in his time.
Some members of Lakas are determined to prevent a repeat of the Estrada presidency. They learned their lesson in 1997 when they allowed Erap to do his thing. Now, they are in the same position, albeit a better one since Ramos and his men already learned their bitter lesson in late 1992 when Ramos gave the anti-crime post to Erap.
Will Erap's re-arrest spark an Edsa tres? Will people go to the streets to defend Erap from his prosecutors?
Though I am in the opposition, my prognosis is categorical---there will be no Edsa tres. No protests will be seen in the streets. No armed encounters will happen between state and dissident forces. Mrs. Arroyo and her minions will get what they want. If it's cha-cha they want, they'll surely get it. If it's martial rule that they want, they'll will surely implement it. And if the people within Erap's camp hope to make a comeback in Malacanang, they will surely be frustrated.

The Emergence of One Elite Rule
Are we ready for another authoritarian rule? Yes, and we are helpless about it and will just succumb to this without bloodshed. Let me tell you why.
First, the forces of conservative politics or what I call the "political elite pushers" are stronger now than the forces of change agents. Simply, if there will be a direct clash between those who want change and those who want the status quo, obviously, the battle will be short-lived and would definitely favor the political elite. This imbalance of power stems from the inability of the movement for change to recruit new faces. There simply are fewer places to mold or cultivate new leaders right now, what with the slowly changing student movement in UP and other places. Worst, the movement is not adequately addressing the problem of leadership succession since the irony of the "Movement" for "change" is simply, it is anemic to internal changes especially when it comes to replacing the old guards with new ones. For many years, we have seen no new faces; only those old, tired bodies leading the charge using old, worn-out slogans.
On the conservative political front, they neither have problems on new leadership nor suffer from succession. Quite simply, the forces of conservatism are being bolstered by the emergence of the scions of the political elite who position themselves as change agents but, are, in truth and in fact, belong to the same, old dirty mold as their fathers and their mothers were. But, being inbued by youth, people see them in a totally agreeable light, blinded by the sparkle of their political pedigree.
This apparent weakness of the opposition stems from the lack of audacity and creativity coming from those who hold the reins of leadership within the movement. The lack of a unified front to fight the forces of conservatism places the entire country into perilous waters. If push comes to shove, the Filipino people do not have a strong, credible and creative force that would hinder or even defeat this gigantuan push of conservatism to effectively plant the seeds of one-man rule.
I shudder to admit it, but the Movement is now at its weakest since the failed attempts which began in 2005. It has been weakened by internal dissension, the lack of a collective agreement on post-Gloria matters, the lack of a definitive ideology that would guide the movement into a collective force and plain and simple, streaks of bad luck due to misapplication of strategies, misappreciation of the political terrain and weather and, finances.
Second, I hate to admit it, but discussions against charter change are being weakened by disparate voices coming ironically from those who oppose it. The very ones who oppose charter change are actually the ones helping this administration justify the imposition of cha-cha. Ask those senators who "oppose cha-cha" and you'll find that, indeed, they support it, but they just want to reserve it for the meantime since it's just one and half years before Gloria steps down. Others, well, they simply oppose cha-cha because of the prospect of term extension.
Third, in desperate times, people always, by nature, want to cling to something less benign and subtly devilish, but perceived as "sublime". Talks about "gringoism", " caudilloism" and "extra-constitutionalism" are spreading, creating a veritable first perception on dissent. Constant and consistent talks centering on this creates a psycho-linguistic backlash that could, indeed, prep up the citizenry to support authoritarianism. News on rising criminality, the prospect of war, state terrorism, lack of peace and order are communicative means aimed at the formation of one sociological world-view---the need for order coming from a unified power.
Lastly, the fluidity of the political situation favors the sudden entry of a "third force" positioning themselves as change agents. As I predicted a couple of entries back, both the traditional conservative forces and the old traditional leftist groups are cancelling themselves out. What is emerging is a third force that combines the good elements of Leftist ideology and the strong conservative pull of societal forces. This third force may be composed of old fogeys of the existing dispensation, just hiding their real dark selves behind the cloak of constitutionalism. What has been created are neo, mini Marcoses who adapted in the ultra liberal political environment and want to concentrate power just among themselves, along with control of resources.
Eventually, even without a coup or charter change, we are actually witnessing our country entering into the banana republic mode just by condoning these constitutional actions of a few pseudo and would-be Marcoses.

What to do?
Failure of MOA-AD is planned
"What I did regarding the peace negotiations with the MILF was done in GOOD FAITH. And for those who want my head, I serve at the pleasure of the president. I respect the decision of the Supreme Court...We will file a manifestation or a motion for reconsideration."Bull. We all know that Malacanang abandoned the MOA-AD when the middle class, especially those belonging to the civil society, registered a howl of protest against it. And the Palace does'nt intend to pursue this, considering that the MILF already said that they will not go back to the negotiating table without the signature of the GRP in a similarly worded agreement. The MILF want nothing less. For sure, negotiations for the stalled peace talks would have to be done after Congress passes the lifting of the foreign equity bill being proposed by Speaker Nograles. As soon as Congress and Malacanang opens the charter up for amendments, that'll be the time for a resumption of the peace talks.
Prosecuting Esperon and the peace panel members for treason? That will never prosper. Esperon enjoys the confidence of the president, because if that's not the case, Gloria would have fired him for obvious dereliction of duty.
Impeachment
Speaking on the impeachment, complainants know that, even if they have sufficient evidence to pill down Gloria, this is a wasteful exercise in futility. They don't have the numbers and time is against them. Congress will definitely prioritize Nograles' bill. The complaint will be relegated in the backburner and for sure, nothing will come out of it.
Maybe the proponents like to squeeze every publicity juice from it. In all likelihood, this will also fail. People already know Gloria's liability and rubbing it in is not a good way to create casus belli.
Will they use those voluminous documents to file criminal complaints against Gloria? Yes. They are using it a carrot and stick approach. Will it work? Well, it will not. If Gloria succeeds in changing the charter, then, this complaint will fall by the wayside. Now, should the elections happen, still, Gloria and her gang of misfits will surely get away with it. The next administration will definitely not create instability by pursuing a case against its predecessor. That would be a waste of time. Besides, Arroyo will surely enter into a compromise agreement whoever succeeds in 2010. Whether its Mar Roxas or even Joseph Estrada, Gloria is sure to escape the full arm of the law.
The Reproductive Health Bill
So, Gloria's minions are sure to get what they want come November. They have the numbers. They have the strength. And surely, they'll not get a solid opposition from the church since the palace is using the Reproductive Health bill as a leverage. Critical in all these moves against Gloria is the backing of the Catholic Church. Without those legions coming from Catholic schools, any attempt at rousing an EDSA-like revolution will fail.
There are talks that Malacanang will enter into a compromise agreement with the Catholic Church. Malacanang wants the church to keep silent against cha-cha in exchange for the president's veto. Without the church in the equation, Gloria is sure to move without opposition for charter change.
Quo Vadis?
So, what to do now? Opposition against Gloria is crumbling like a ginger bread house. If people expect to do it through "legal, constitutional means", failure is a certainty. If people, especially Atty. Harry Roque, the Black and White Movement, and Iloilo Vice Governor Suplico wants Gloria to account for her sins, even after her term expires, dream on. Gloria and her husband will surely escape the long arm of the law. With or without elections in 2010, they'll escape unscathed.
The next move? If people really want justice done. If people really want to make an example of Gloria, like what they did against Erap in 2001, they may have to admit that doing it the constitutional route is not the best way to do it.

Skin the Old Bureaucrats!
A recent meeting between Genuine Opposition (GO) Senator Jinggoy Estrada and Gloria's Golden Haired Boy Mike Defensor created speculations about a possible "power-sharing" scheme between the forces of Gloria and Erap. Jinggoy confirmed these "preliminary talks", saying that the possibility of a merger between the GO and Gloria's KAMPI in 2010 is strong. It seems that this "unified front" will field common candidates, possibly with the standard bearer coming from GO and the Vice President from KAMPI.
So, that explains why the "Genuine" opposition is so silent about the plight of the Filipino People nowadays. It confirms the acceptance of GO of the "political truce" offered by this administration. That's why we don't hear Adel Tamano or any other GO personality lambasting the administration for an overpriced oil, soaring food prices, Northrail project, ZTE-NBN, graft and corruption and continuing human rights violations.
This just shows how totally alike these two forces are. They are NOT Genuine Oppositionists nor are they legitimate nationalists. They are part of the old cancer which inflicts so much harm against the People. They are the scums who play fiddle with our abusers, making them our abusers too.
Expect no hope come 2010 because we will just be seeing a turnover of power from one sorry bureaucrat to another equally greedy one.
I remember what Senator Cheez Escudero once said, that the role of the Genuine Opposition in the Senate are those of fiscalizers. Good term. But is this what we expect of them in these critical times?
No.
We want people like him rising up to the challenge. We want people like him to stand up and take the cudgels of leadership for and on behalf of the Filipino People. We want young nationalists to lead us in protest against this administration.
Where are the Patriots, I ask in previous posts?
The Patriots are those who belong to the red fronts and the green fronts. They are those who take part in those Black Friday protest rallies. They are the Black and White, the Grey Fronts, the Young Rebels, the May 1 rebels, the Teofisto Guingonas of the New Generation, the Young Officers Union of the New Generation, the Magdalos, the Patriotic Marines, the Coalition for National Salvation, the Bagong Tao Movement (BTM), the Mar Roxas legions, and the true Marxist-Leninists of our age.
They are the young mothers and the old mamas. They are the daddys and their sons. They are the enlightened ones who long for change.
We don't need to debate about this, BenigNo. No. Debates are those for the cowardly and people of huge egos.
Action is what we need right now. Talks are cheap. Let us ACT NOW AND UNITE FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS BELOVED COUNTRY.
RISE UP, O PATRIOTS OF THE NEW PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION! RISE UP AND WRITE HISTORY!

Dangerous Times Ahead
People are starting to suffer due to the worsening food crisis. It would not be long before another May 1 situation breaks out and finally gore this administration out.
Yesterday, a group of personalities have also risen against the creeping dictatorship. Kadamay, an urban poor organisation, spray painted MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando's "pangit" posters along EDSA. Calling him "berdugo", Kadamay members engaged BF to a debate over national radio over the program of Ted Failon and Korina Sanchez.
Fernando was stunned. He was no matched to the wits of the poor. BF claims to be that intelligent but pitted against a poor guy like that spokesperson of Kadamay, BF is a weakling, a nobody. BF is an insecure guy wanting to project power but in truth, has no power at all. And he's gay.
Now, let's see if BF can stand against Makati mayor Jejomar Binay. Binay has just ordered the tearing down of BF's illegal "pangit" posters in Makati. Binay said those posters are signs of BF's arrogance. That's true. Who in his right mind would do such a thing except an arrogant person?
Go ahead Jojo! Fight this scoundrel, this anti-democracy scum. BF is the symbol of this regime's arrogance. Let all the democratic forces go against BF. Tear him down!
The people should make BF the symbol of anti-democracy and autocracy here in this country. This pseudo-leader should be punished by the people now!
I encourage Jojo and all the rest of those who hate autocracy, especially the Black and White Movement. Rally behind Jojo in his fight against this character BF. Call for BF's resignation. Call for BF's head.
This is a very good way to regain the momentum lost in the fight against Gloria.

Don't Tear the Movement
The Black and White Movement protested when former president Erap went on stage during the inter-faith rally. I appeal to my comrades at the BWM not to give a big fuss out of this.
We must be laser focus on our fight now--THE ENEMY IS GLORIA. Our mission is for the restoration of morality in governance. If a person who formerly indulged in corruption has turned a new leaf, we must be forgiving and forget. We must be laser focus on our fight now--THE ENEMY IS GLORIA. Our mission is for the restoration of morality in governance. If a person who formerly indulged in corruption has turned a new leaf, we must be forgiving and forget.
